Rome Walking Tour Pantheon
Tour Description
We will begin our tour at Piazza Navona with the Fountain of the Four Rivers also known as the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi. This fountain was commissioned by Pope Innocent X and designed by Bernini. The Four Rivers represented are the Danube, the Ganges River, the Nile, and the Rio della Plata. Each fountain personifies a then-known continent.
Our next stop is the Church of St. Agnes if it is open. This church was constructed where Saint Agnes was martyred. The Pamphili Palace is adjacent to the church, and in the chapel, you will hopefully see the underground remains of the stadium of Domitian, which was used mostly for athletic competitions. It could seat approximately 15,000 to 20,000 people.
On our way to the Pantheon, we go by Corso Del Rinascimento and the Palazzo Madama which is the seat of the Italian Senate. Palazzo Madama was built on top of the ancient baths of Nero. Next is the Palazzo Della Sapienza, which once housed the University of Rome.
Stopping to marvel at the Church Della Minerva, which is truly museum in and of itself is quite a treat. It was designed by Michelangelo, Perugino, and Lippi.
Our last stop of the day is the majestic Pantheon. Pantheon is Greek for "temple", which is entirely fitting because it was dedicated to all the gods of Ancient Rome. Currently, the Pantheon serves as a tomb for great artists, composers, and architects, such as Raphael, Corelli, and Peruzzi along with two kings of Italy, Vittorio Emanuele II and Umberto I.
