Inspiration of St. Matthew - Caravaggio

After a pause for lunch, our private tour or Rome will take us to Santa Maria del Popolo. The church in the square looks unremarkable by Rome standards. Who would know that residing inside are 2 of Caravaggio's most admired works. (see the picture of "Crucifixion of St. Peter" above)

In the winter of 2012, one of the 2 Caravaggio's,  Conversion on the Way to Damascus, was on loan to the Pushlin Gallery in Moscow. I witnessed Russians, waiting in line outside in -30 degrees, to see this painting while it was in Moscow. Ironic when you see the number of people walk by Santa Maria del Popolo not even realizing what is inside.

San Luigi dei Francesi has more Caravaggio masterpieces! This gem is just around the corner from the Piazza Navona and is probably missed by the majority of visitors to Rome. This church is among the most beautiful , on the inside, in all of Rome.

At San Luigi dei Francesi we will also find Roman Baroque art on the exterior and Renaissance styles on the interior.
San Luigi dei Francesi is the French national church dedicated to St. Louis IX, King of France.

When the size of this private tour of Rome reaches 6 persons, private transportation is included !" Up to 6 persons, taxi cabs are required and are at the tourists' expense. For smaller groups it is not a large expense.
